Antique Books. Worth the Reading

An antique book is more than a collection of pages by your favorite author. It is a piece of history, a glimpse into the past. One in which the binding was done by hand the paper often likewise and if far back enough in time, the pen was a quill.

There are many factors which influence the value of an antique book, as in all antiques. First there is the condition of the book. The binding, the pages, whether dog-eared or torn, or God forbid, missing. The pages may have notes written on them. (Which can often be valuable in themselves if penned by a famous person or under unusual circumstances) or they may be damaged or stained or any number of factors which will affect their desirability. In the same way if a book is signed by it's author this usually increases it's price, although in the modern world not necessarily as "book signings" are all too common as a marketing tool and have helped to downplay the importance of a signed edition. All of these factors contribute to the overall value of your antique book.

The overall availability is a factor in price but is not necessarily the main factor as a book may be hard to find but not desirable. In other words it may be rare but nobody wants it! Confusing? Yes it can be. It is prudent to consult a dealer to appraise your antique book whether for insurance purposes or because you are attempting to sell it. In the final analysis, antiques are always only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it.

Appraisals Dealers usually need to see the book itself in order to identify and appraise it. You may submit photographs if you cannot see the dealer in person due to distance or time. They will require usually a photograph of the title page, the back side of the title page (also called the copyright page), the first and last pages of text, and the outer covers and spine in order to evaluate an individual copy. It is best to have very close up, quality photographs if you must go this route. If you are not proficient with a digital camera, ask one of your friends to do it for you. The popularity of digital cameras today makes quality photos easy to accomplish. Do not try and photocopy the book! This produces very poor results and may in fact damage the book due to the pressure exerted upon the spine in this process.

You often hear the phrase "first edition" in reference to books and this can influence the price of the book if there were, in fact more than one edition! Many times there were not. Be careful when someone touts the first edition status of an antique book and attempt to determine for yourself if there were indeed subsequent editions. Again remember to use all of the resources online and elsewhere to obtain valuable and often free information on your antique book. There are several national societies of book dealers, "antiquarians" and of course appraisers that you may take advantage of in the search for information. There are also book collecting societies that you may investigate. Take your time and learn all you can before you buy or sell your antique book.

Promise Her A Rose Garden, An Antique Rose Garden

Promise Her A Rose Garden, An Antique Rose Garden

Submitted By: August Holcombe

Why antiques? Antique roses are those breed by species, sports, varieties, or cultivars prior to the first hybrid tea, (LaFrance) in 1867. Some people are not as strict in their interpretation of antique roses as the American Rose Society, and claim any rose 75 years or older as being old.

Why antiques? They have withstood the test of time. Many are alive and well, living in old grave yards, home sites, and near public buildings that are over 100 years old. Although some get black spot or something, they nevertheless flourish.

Why antiques? Modern day roses, especially the hybrid teas have to be pampered and babysat. Not only do they have to be fertilized, watered, and prune just right to live for any length of time. Hybrid teas are usually grafted on to other root stock. It appears to most horticulturalists they plants are hardier on their own rootstock.

Why antiques? Hybrid teas have been breed for form of flower, how well they do in vases, and repeat bloom. Fragrance, hardiness, and other great qualities have mostly disappeared, although now there are hybridizers experimentally with fragrance. I read recently of petunias being used in experiments to give hybrid teas and other new roses an old flower smell. For the most part, new roses make the ugliest of bushes, whereas the antiques are often graceful in form.

In the late 1700's to early 1800's, visitors to China, specifically botanists, brought back to the west rose that would bloom more than once a year, called remontant. They named these roses "China" Roses and "Tea" Roses. Until then, all roses in the west bloomed only once a year. These were the hardy roses, sports, and varieties grown in the Americas, Europe, and parts of Asia. These roses flourished in the wild, even.
The Chinas and Teas did very well in warm climates. In northern Europe, they could not withstand the cold. So nurserymen and other began crossing the Tea and Chinas with such native species as the dog rose, the Centifolias, Damasks, and Gallicas. The end product of all this hybridizing produced Bourbons, Grandifolias, Hybrid Perpetuals, Noisettes, Portlands, Polyanthas, etc.

Old roses look spectacular in all types of situations. The native species of rose go swell with other natives, especially on rustic, naturalistic sites. Antique roses look well in rustic garden laid out formally or informally. Most old roses look fantastic in abstract modern, baroque, or classical formal or informal gardens. The antiques set off perennials, herbs, and other shrubs in the border. They are at home on either city plots or vast estates.

So the least you can do for your one and only is to give her a rose garden. After all, Napoleon gave Josephine, "Malmaison", outside Paris, reportedly the greatest rose garden since ancient times.
Josephine had a painter who strolled around her garden painting flowers, particularly roses. His name is Redoubte and his works command a high price.

Some of the rose varieties grown at Malmaison can be purchased today, as well as, many others. Petals From the Past in Jemison, Alabama is a great place. So is the Antique Rose Emporium in Tyler, Texas and Suburban Atlanta. In Watsonville, California, there is Roses of Yesterday and Today. You can order old roses from http://www.antiqueroseemporium.com/ and http://www.rosesofyesterday.com/rosenn.htm.

4. Look at Rugs

Now that you've gained some general knowledge it's time to start having a look at a variety of antique Oriental rugs. Visit shops that sell them and begin by trying to identify where they're from, their age, and their material type. This process will better prepare you for having the ability to recognize an antique oriental rug that has value.

6. Buy An Old Rug

Start by buying a cheap old worn rug. You can take this rug home and put it through the test. Find out about the textures, weaving process, and everything else you can. Don't spend much on it because you are going to dissect it.

7. Start Shopping

Now that you've done some reading, found a style to specialize in and your feeling a little more confident, you can start looking for your first real purchase. Many antique stores, carpet dealer, and auction houses will have antique oriental rugs. Don't forget about what's available online. Have a look around. If you find something that interests you drop the site an email or phone them.

8. Check Auction Houses

Once you get a little experience you'll want to check out some of the well known auction houses like Sotheby's or Christies. Once you know what you are looking for there are some great buys to be had purchasing this way.

Cultural Decorating Trends Welcomes Moroccan Home D?cor In 2007

The trend of culturally inspired decorating has become more and more popular. People use influences from all over the world to decorate their homes. Over time, Asian and Spanish inspirations have evolved to become two of the most popular decorating trends in the world; however, new cultural influences are beginning to pop up everywhere. One of these trends is Moroccan home decor.

The Moroccan style is derived from Hispanic-Moorish style influences. It has appeared as a new trend in design and decoration and has become popular in cities in France, the United Kingdom and the United States. The popularity of Moroccan home d?cor has increased due in part by the renovations of Riads in Marrakech, a city in west-central Morocco based in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. A Riad is a traditional Moroccan house that accentuates an interior garden. Moroccan home d?cor is unique in the fact that it brings together influences from Africa, Hispanic nations and Europe.

One of the great things about Moroccan home d?cor is the fact that most of the pieces are handcrafted. These items are not factory produced. They are individually crafted to make sure they are made of the utmost quality. From handcrafted tables and lamps to unique quilts and rugs, these Moroccan treasures add a touch of culture and historical ambiance to any room.

Some of the most classic pieces of Moroccan home decor would be the various types of hand-woven rugs. These Moroccan style rugs are commonly known as handmade kilims and come in many different designs and colors. Traditional kilims are handmade by women from the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. To make these kilims, the women use a variety of stitches and different arrangements of triangles, rectangles and other shapes to make the design. Most kilims come in the traditional black and red Moroccan colors, however there are kilims that come in different colors. A nice aspect of a kilim is that it can be used as an area rug, but it can also be hung on the wall to decorate any room.

To go along with the handmade kilims, Moroccan style furniture is another great feature to add. Moroccan style furniture is not your typical furniture. It is not plain wood stained to match other pieces in the room with a few fixtures. Typical Moroccan home d?cor is accentuated with bold colors and intricate designs. From ottomans and nightstands, to tables and mirrors, it is difficult to find two designs alike due to the unique and elaborate way the furniture is shaped.

While there are so many aspects to Moroccan themed decorating, it is worth discussing the many Moroccan ceramic pieces that are handcrafted. The ceramic accent pieces, available to accompany any other Moroccan style piece of furniture or rug, have an interesting antique look. The crafters often use metals and mirrors to draw attention to the shape and design of the ceramic piece. Again, bold colors and intricate designs are used making it difficult to find two pieces alike. These ceramic designs can be used as vases, watering pots, jewelry boxes and jars.

Whether you?re an interior designer or want to liven up an otherwise plain room, using Moroccan home d?cor can be relatively easy because there is no bad decision when it comes to choosing authentic Moroccan pieces. Using a decorative rug or ceramic fixture can easily brighten a boring room. This is why Moroccan style decorating has become so popular in the United States and many other countries.

Antiques Mean Something Different To Everyone

Many people, myself included love the look of old things. We love to furnish our homes with old furniture and different nick knacks that have come from a different era. Many of these things are antiques while many are just old looking. It has become very popular these days to decorate your house with older looking furniture. Many manufacturers make modern furniture that look like antiques but in fact are not.

This is a cheaper way for people to have the look without the expense. Of course they also miss out on the history that goes with the original piece. But for many people including myself it is an option that we welcome. Many of my original antiques are things that have been handed down through the generations of my family. These things I really treasure. Then the rest are copies that blend in very well with the look that I like.

I could not tell you if any of my antiques are very valuable or not but I must say that I love them because of the way they look, their craftsmanship and of course for their sentimental value. It is such a shame to think that so many antiques have been thrown out or destroyed over time because they were old and not fashionable any more.

If you are someone who really loves the original product whether it be furniture, cars, glass wear, dolls and so on and you want to purchase some then you should know a little bit about antiques. If you don't, then ask someone who does to help you. There are so many people out there ready to rip you off so you should be well armed. Just because something looks old and you love it does not mean it is worthy of an expensive antique price tag.

Of course, in the end if you've got the money and that is what you want then price doesn't really matter but generally for the average person you should only pay what the product is truly worth. Especially if you want this product as an investment as many collectors do.

You need to learn about things such as certain markings or numbers to look for on some antiques. It is a way of knowing that they are original. It's sad to think that there are also many remakes that are being sold as the originals when they are really just excellent copies. That is why it is important to learn a few things.

Ask around to find an antique dealer that has a good reputation. Then go and talk to him or her about what you are interested in. They can be a great source of information. There are also many good books that will be very helpful and educational. Once you arm yourself with this knowledge then you can start shopping with confidence.
